Administration of Local Anesthesia by the Georgia Dental Hygienist
Is this course approved by the Georgia Board of Dentistry? Yes, this course has been approved by the Georgia Board of Dentistry! You will receive 60 hours of continuing education credit when you take this course.
Do I need to be a licensed dental hygienist in Georgia to take this course?Yes, you must be licensed in Georgia.

How is the course organized? The course has a didactic portion and a clinical portion. The didactic portion is divided into topics with each topic containing multimedia presentations, practice tests and learning activities that are completed in your office. All pracitce tests and learning activities must be completed before attending the clinical portion.
What will we be doing during the clinical portion? After reviewing the online material and taking a final examination, we will be practicing the administration of all the major local anesthetic injections until clinical competency is obtained. Injections include infiltration, the posterior, middle and anterior superior alveolar, the greater palatine, the nasopalatine, the inferior alveolar, the long buccal, and the mental.
Will faculty be available to help us before attending the clinical portion? Yes, faculty will always be available to help. In addition, periodic webinars will be held, and students will be encouraged to submit questions to be discussed.
How long is the clinical portion? Two days.
Who are the instructors? The principle clinical instructor is Dr. Amelia Granberry, a clinical dentist licensed in Georgia and Tennessee with 10+ years of teaching experience. She will be assisted by other clinical instructors.
What materials do I need to bring to the clinical portion of the course? Besides clinical personal protection equipment (PPE'S), you will need to bring two sterilized anesthetic syringes that fit your hand. If you have small hands, petite syringes may be desirable.
Where will the clinical portion be held? The clinical portion will be held in the north Georgia area (Near Chattanooga, Tennessee). Specific directions will be provided after registration..
How much does the course cost? The fee for the course is $1650

- Identify anatomical landmarks that pertain to administration,

- Understand the pharmacology of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors,
- Select and prepare proper armamentaria,
- Record local anesthetic procedures and complications,
- Manage medical and legal complications,
- Recognize and manage post-injection complications,
- Manage reactions to injections,
- Employ infection control techniques including disposal of sharp's,
- Administer local anesthetic agents with emphasis on technique, aspiration, slow injection, minimum effective dosage,
- Prevent, diagnosis and manage medical emergencies,
- Recognize, manage and treat toxic reactions to local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors,
- Recognize, manage and treat allergic reactions to local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors,
- Recognize, manage and treat drug interactions with local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors,
- Calculate highest safe dose based on patient's weight and/or age,
- Recognize the need for reinjection,
- Administer local anesthesia by infiltration,
- Administer local anesthesia by nerve blockage,
- Monitor the patient's physical status while under the effects of local anesthetics.
